Campus Ministries Address Rising Sports Betting Trends Among Students
The rapid expansion of legalized sports gambling in the United States has created new pastoral challenges for college ministries. Following the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to legalize sports betting, mobile applications have made wagering highly accessible. Recent data indicates that while 27 percent of Americans hold active betting accounts, the participation rate among men aged 18 to 49 has reached 52 percent.
Campus ministers are now navigating how to address this trend, which many students do not view as morally problematic. Ben Weber, a staff member with Campus Outreach, compares the widespread nature of sports betting to the prevalence of pornography, noting the difficulty of counseling students on a practice that has historically been considered a vice. As betting platforms expand to include political outcomes and other non-sporting events, ministry leaders are increasingly tasked with providing guidance on the ethical implications of gambling within the context of Christian discipleship.
