Christian charity CARE calls for tax reform to support families
The Christian charity CARE has responded to the recent government Budget by calling for fundamental tax reform to better support families. While the organization welcomed specific measures, such as increased support for self-employed fathers and higher taxes on high-stakes gambling machines, it argued that the overall financial relief provided to parents remains insufficient given current economic pressures.
Caroline Ansell, CARE’s director of advocacy and policy, stated that the current tax system often penalizes rather than protects families. She emphasized that removing financial barriers to raising children is essential for national prosperity. While acknowledging the difficult economic climate, including global instability, the charity urged political parties to prioritize family-focused tax policies ahead of the next general election.
CARE is currently developing a comprehensive set of reform proposals, which are scheduled for publication in early 2027. The organization intends to use these findings to engage with policymakers and advocate for a tax structure that more effectively recognizes the contribution of families to society.
