Religious Freedom Concerns Rise Amid Legal Challenges in India and Pakistan

Christians in South Asia are facing increased legal and social pressure as anti-conversion laws and religious tensions impact local communities. In India, thirteen states have enacted "Freedom of Religion" legislation, which prohibits conversions achieved through force, fraud, or allurement. Critics argue these laws are being used to suppress religious expression and facilitate unjust arrests, despite India being a signatory to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

In a recent case in Madhya Pradesh, six pastors and one Christian were sentenced to five years in prison following a disturbance at a private birthday party. Although the host testified that no wrongdoing occurred, the group was convicted after an intoxicated neighbor filed charges and incited a crowd against them. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, reports indicate that anti-Christian sentiment has led to incidents of mob violence, including a recent event where between 10 and 15 Christian families were trapped inside their homes.
