Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong sentenced to ten additional years in prison

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The sentencing, which occurred under Beijing’s national security law, extends Wong's incarceration until late 2036. Wong, who has been in custody since November 2020, was previously serving a sentence of four years and eight months for conspiracy to commit subversion.

Wong, a Christian who has previously cited his faith as a motivation for his advocacy, rose to prominence as a leader of the 2014 Umbrella Movement. Following the announcement of his new sentence, international figures and human rights organizations have condemned the ruling. Hong Kong Watch called for his immediate release, while various British political figures, including Lord Alton and Iain Duncan Smith, criticized the move as a suppression of democratic freedoms.

Supporters have praised Wong’s decision to remain in Hong Kong rather than seek exile. The activist, who co-founded the now-disbanded political party Demosisto, remains a focal point for international concerns regarding the implementation of national security legislation in the region.
