Tanzanian Government Pressures Clergy Amid Post-Election Unrest

Tensions between the Tanzanian government and Christian leaders have escalated following widespread protests over electoral reforms. Demonstrations erupted in late October 2025 after opposition leaders were imprisoned, leading to a government crackdown that included internet blackouts, curfews, and reports of violence. Pastor Simon Patilo of the Dodoma Reformed Baptist Church stated that security forces killed 197 protesters nationwide, describing the period as a time of significant mourning and loss of trust in state institutions.

Prior to the unrest, various churches had publicly advocated for legal changes to ensure free and fair elections, a stance that reportedly strained relations with the government. Despite this friction, the Tanzania Revenue Authority has recently enlisted religious leaders to promote new tax policies from the pulpit. Some clergy members have expressed concern that this government pressure to disseminate political messaging threatens the separation of church and state and may signal a decline in religious freedom within the country.
