Pakistani Judge Expresses Fear Over Blasphemy Case Security
During a recent hearing at the Islamabad High Court, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan disclosed that he fears for his safety while presiding over blasphemy-related cases. The judge expressed concern that he could be shot within his own courtroom, noting that such security threats are discouraging judicial officials from hearing sensitive appeals. Justice Khan also criticized the state for failing to provide adequate protection for judges and witnesses involved in these proceedings.
Christian human rights advocate Sardar Mushtaq Gill, founder of LEAD Ministries, highlighted the judge's comments as evidence that intimidation is undermining the rule of law in Pakistan. Gill warned that if members of the judiciary feel vulnerable to violence, it raises significant concerns regarding the safety of defendants, lawyers, and human rights defenders. Despite these security apprehensions, the court proceeded to suspend the remaining sentence of a blasphemy convict, ordering his release on bail. The court has scheduled further hearings for the pending appeals in two weeks.
