Bishop of Winchester addresses humanitarian crisis facing Sudanese Christians

The Bishop of Winchester, Philip Mounstephen, recently addressed the House of Lords regarding the severe impact of the ongoing civil war in Sudan on the country’s Christian population. Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The Bishop reported that churches are being utilized as shelters from aerial bombardment, though he noted that both warring factions have also occupied church properties for military purposes.

During the debate, the Bishop questioned the British government on its assessment of religious freedom in the region and requested assurances that humanitarian aid is reaching vulnerable, historically marginalized communities, specifically those in the Nuba Mountains. In response, Lord Wood of Anfield stated that the government provides £146 million in annual humanitarian support. He emphasized that these funds are distributed through NGOs and local partners, including religious organizations, to ensure assistance reaches those in need.
