Allied Democratic Forces Return to Lubero Territory in Eastern Congo
Fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have returned to the Lubero territory in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, launching an attack on Maikengu village on November 3. Local authorities report that militants looted homes and businesses before setting fire to various structures, including pharmacies. Residents are fleeing the area toward Kambau and Nziapanda, with reports confirming at least one Christian was killed by machete during the raid, while many others remain missing.
The return of the ADF has exacerbated an already difficult humanitarian situation, as the region is currently managing an Ebola outbreak. Local residents expressed deep concern over the dual threat of disease and violence, noting that the attack has forced them to abandon safety protocols to escape the militants. This incursion follows a significant 2024 offensive in the Bapere region that resulted in 42 deaths.
While the Congolese army has begun deploying troops to counter the ADF's advance, civilians continue to face significant instability. Analysts suggest the group sustains its operations through the control of local gold mines, which reportedly generate over $1 million annually, alongside the forced abduction of civilians to bolster their ranks.
