Two Christians Face Blasphemy Charges in Pakistan

Two Christian men have been arrested in Pakistan's Punjab province on charges of blasphemy, a crime that carries a potential death penalty under the nation's penal code. On August 29, police in Lahore arrested 26-year-old Samuel Arif following allegations from a local resident that he made derogatory remarks regarding the Prophet Muhammad and his wife, Aisha. The complainant also alleged that Arif harassed his minor daughters. Representatives from the aid group HARDS Pakistan report that Arif’s family denies these claims, suggesting he may have been falsely accused due to a personal dispute.

Earlier in the month, on August 11, authorities in Gujranwala District arrested 30-year-old laborer Amir Masih. He was charged under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code for allegedly sharing a social media video that compared Christ and Muhammad. These arrests occur amid ongoing concerns regarding the application of blasphemy laws in Pakistan, which were the subject of protests by the Minorities Alliance Pakistan during National Minorities Day observances in Faisalabad.
