RSS Chief Addresses New York Event Amid International Scrutiny

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Mohan Bhagwat spoke to thousands at Madison Square Garden in New York City on August 29. The event, titled “Universal Oneness Celebrations” and organized by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue, featured Bhagwat speaking on themes of unity and diversity. This appearance is part of a broader international outreach campaign launched by the RSS earlier this year to address global criticism regarding the organization’s record on religious minorities.

While the RSS describes itself as a cultural movement dedicated to national welfare, critics and international observers maintain concerns about its influence on Indian governance and its treatment of minority groups. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recommended in its 2026 annual report that targeted sanctions be placed on the RSS. For many religious minorities in India, the New York event is viewed as an attempt to improve the organization's international image despite ongoing reports of persecution.
