Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa Faces Backlash Over Decision to Ordain Women

Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, a prominent church historically associated with the Jesus Movement, has announced that it now ordains both men and women to pastoral ministry. During a service on November 1, 2026, Pastor Char Brodersen stated that the decision reflects the church's belief in the priesthood of all believers and the importance of individual spiritual gifting. Brodersen emphasized that both men and women are created in God's image and are called to partner in the work of the Kingdom.

The announcement has drawn public opposition from the Calvary Chapel Association (CCA). The CCA’s Heartland Regional Team issued a statement expressing disagreement with the move, asserting that there is no biblical basis for women to serve as elders or pastors. The regional team described the decision as a significant departure from the historical convictions taught by the church's founder, Chuck Smith.

This development highlights a growing divide within the movement. The CCA noted that the shift follows the earlier departure of Brian Brodersen from the association's leadership and the subsequent formation of the Calvary Global Network. Regional leaders expressed that their concerns regarding the church's direction have been developing for some time.
