New Pilgrimage Trail Honors History of Manx Bible Translation

A new pilgrimage route, the Manx Translators’ Trail, has been launched on the Isle of Man to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the first complete publication of the Bible in the Manx language. Known as 'Yn Vible Casherick,' the full Bible was first published in 1775, following a decades-long effort by local clergy to translate the scriptures for a population that primarily spoke Manx rather than English.

The trail guides walkers to 21 locations across the island where parish clergy worked on the translation project. The initiative highlights the contributions of figures such as the Rev. Phillip Moore, who served as the chief editor, and his student John Kelly. Historical accounts note the profound impact of the translation on the local community, with stories of residents expressing deep gratitude upon finally hearing the scriptures in their native tongue. The route serves as both a historical record of the island's religious heritage and a tribute to the collaborative work of the 18th-century translators.
