Lifeway Research Survey Finds Economic Pressures Impacting U.S. Protestant Churches

A recent survey from Lifeway Research indicates that 54% of U.S. Protestant pastors believe current economic conditions are negatively affecting their congregations. This figure represents an increase from 49% in 2025, though it remains lower than the 66% reported in 2024. The study highlights that church giving has largely failed to keep pace with inflation, which rose 3.7% as of September 2026, while median church giving saw no change.

The findings reveal significant demographic and denominational disparities. African American pastors reported the highest level of strain, with 82% noting negative impacts. Among denominations, Methodist and Presbyterian/Reformed pastors were more likely to report economic difficulties than their Baptist or nondenominational counterparts. Despite these challenges, 50% of pastors stated that current offering levels are meeting their annual budgets, and researchers noted that year-end contributions during the Christmas season may provide additional financial relief for many congregations.
