Nigeria Bible Translation Trust highlights security and funding challenges
The Nigeria Bible Translation Trust (NBTT) recently marked its golden jubilee in Jos, Plateau state, by highlighting significant obstacles to its mission of translating the Bible into the country’s more than 600 minority languages. Executive Director Patience Toma reported that widespread insecurity in rural areas has disrupted translation projects and resulted in the deaths of some personnel, though the organization has not released official casualty statistics.
Toma called upon the federal government to increase security presence in rural regions to protect language workers and ensure the continuity of literacy and language development programs. Beyond security concerns, the organization faces a shortage of trained linguists and consultants necessary to expand its reach.
Financial sustainability also remains a primary concern for the NBTT. According to Toma, approximately 95% of the organization's funding currently originates from foreign sources, primarily in Western nations. She urged Nigerian churches and local institutions to increase their financial support, emphasizing that domestic investment is essential for the long-term viability of Bible translation efforts within the country.
