The Passion Translation (TPT), a popular biblical text with over one million copies sold, is facing renewed scrutiny regarding the claims made by its lead translator, Brian Simmons. Simmons, who began the project in 2009, has stated that the translation was commissioned directly by Jesus Christ. In various interviews, he has attributed his insights into Hebrew and biblical secrets to divine intervention, while also claiming the translation was named after an angel he reportedly witnessed in a church meeting.

While the translation has garnered significant support from prominent Pentecostal and charismatic leaders, including Bill Johnson of Bethel Church, critics have raised concerns about the translation's scholarly foundations. Simmons has previously recounted his background as a missionary in Panama, noting that he proceeded with translation work despite being advised by a Greek scholar that he lacked the necessary academic credentials.
