Faroese Bible Society Releases First New Testament Translation Since 1937

The Faroese Bible Society has officially launched a new translation of the New Testament, marking the first such update in the Faroe Islands since 1937. Developed by an ecumenical working group led by former Lutheran bishop Hans Jacob Joensen, the project aims to provide a modern text that bridges denominational divides between the Lutheran national church and local free churches.

Prominent evangelical leader Jenis av Rana stated that the translation is designed to be accessible to younger generations while honoring the islands' liturgical traditions. The volume includes explanatory footnotes, a detailed glossary, and color maps to enhance readability. This release serves as the first of three planned installments, with future projects intended to include the Psalms and eventually a complete Bible translation.

Translators worked from original biblical languages to ensure linguistic accuracy for the approximately 55,000 residents of the North Atlantic archipelago. The project underwent extensive review by theologians and linguists to ensure the text remains both theologically sound and culturally relevant.
