Australian Principal Resigns Over Mandatory LGBTQ+ Awareness Event

Janelle Rowe, a veteran educator with 34 years of service, has resigned from her position as principal of Bonython Primary School in Canberra, Australia. The resignation followed a dispute with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Education Directorate regarding the school's participation in "Wear It Purple Day," an annual event focused on LGBTQIA+SB awareness. Rowe had requested to replace the event with "Bullying No Way Week," a broader anti-bullying initiative, arguing that discussions regarding sexualized topics are the responsibility of parents rather than primary schools.

Following her refusal to host the event, the ACT Education Directorate placed Rowe under direct supervision and presented her with internal allegations. According to reports, the directorate cited potential staff resignations as a concern regarding her stance. While some staff members reportedly expressed private agreement with Rowe, she ultimately chose to resign after being questioned on her willingness to participate in the awareness day.
