Debate Grows Over Therapeutic Trends Promoting Family Estrangement

A recent discussion has emerged regarding the influence of modern therapeutic practices on family relationships. Reports indicate that some licensed professionals are increasingly advocating for "no contact" policies as a primary method for maintaining mental health. A survey cited by the Wall Street Journal found that approximately one-third of 7,000 estranged parents believe their adult children were encouraged by therapists to sever family ties.

Critics of this trend, including licensed professional counselor Debra Fileta, argue that the misuse of clinical terminology—such as labeling disagreements as "gaslighting" or "toxic"—is replacing necessary reconciliation efforts with cultural fads. While experts acknowledge that distancing is sometimes essential in cases of abuse, violence, or addiction, there is growing concern that minor conflicts are being mischaracterized as trauma. This shift, often amplified by social media, is prompting a broader conversation about whether current therapeutic approaches are fostering healing or unnecessarily deepening family divisions.
