Young Life Research Highlights Growing Reliance on AI Companions Among Youth

The RELATE Project 2026, a study conducted by the youth ministry Young Life, reveals that 35 percent of young people now utilize AI companions, with usage rising to 45 percent among those aged 13 to 15. The research, which surveyed over 7,100 individuals across 11 countries, indicates that 60 percent of these users feel more comfortable discussing personal problems with AI than with human friends or family members.

Despite the prevalence of digital interaction, the study notes a decline in the number of close relationships, dropping from an average of 5.3 in 2023 to 4.4 in 2025. Furthermore, 40 percent of respondents expressed uncertainty about having an adult in their lives who is genuinely interested in listening to them. While 64 percent of young people still prefer face-to-face communication, Young Life leadership suggests that the findings point to a significant craving for authentic, in-person community. The organization emphasizes that building trust with youth requires adults to prioritize confidentiality and provide a non-judgmental space for conversation.
