Southwell Minster Faces Potential Closure Amid £20 Million Funding Crisis

Southwell Minster, a historic Grade I-listed cathedral in Nottinghamshire, is facing a severe financial crisis that threatens its continued operation. The Very Rev Dr Stephen Evans, Dean of Southwell, stated that the cathedral’s resources are nearly exhausted and that approximately £20 million is required to address long-term underinvestment and necessary building repairs. Currently, the cathedral relies on income from visitors, worshippers, and commercial activities, as the Church Commissioners do not provide funding for the maintenance of the physical structure.

Newark MP Robert Jenrick has raised the issue in the House of Commons, warning that the cathedral could be forced to close as early as next year without emergency intervention. He has urged the government to consider reinstating VAT relief on repairs for listed places of worship to alleviate the financial burden on such sites. While Commons Leader Sir Alan Campbell has committed to discussing the matter with the Second Church Estates Commissioner, Dr. Evans noted that the situation at Southwell reflects a broader financial struggle facing many cathedrals and parish churches across the country.
