BMS World Mission Report Highlights Ethical Challenges in UK Fashion Industry

A new report from the Christian charity BMS World Mission, titled the UK Ethical Fashion Guide 2026, has evaluated the labor and environmental practices of 336 clothing brands. The study, which utilized research from Baptist World Aid Australia, assessed companies based on supplier relationships, human rights monitoring, worker empowerment, and environmental sustainability. Findings indicate that 88% of the companies reviewed failed to provide evidence of paying a living wage to workers in any of their production facilities.

The rankings revealed that several major UK supermarket clothing lines scored lower than budget retailer Primark, which received 35 points. Among supermarkets, Tesco’s F&F led with 40 points, followed by Aldi at 33, Sainsbury’s Tu at 27, and Asda’s George at 18. High-street retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Next scored 49, while top-performing brands like Rodd & Gunn reached 72 points. The average score across all companies was 34 out of 100, leading BMS to conclude that significant improvements are required across the entire fashion sector.
