Pastor dies following sign collapse at UK Christian festival

The Big Church Festival, Britain’s largest annual Christian music event, was cancelled on its opening day, August 28, following a fatal accident at Wiston Park in West Sussex. A 41-year-old pastor, Robert Guanco of Jesus Living Water Church in Eastbourne, died after a large sign fell on attendees. While initial reports indicated six people were injured, authorities later clarified that four individuals were hospitalized, two with serious injuries and two with minor injuries.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise as the structure, which reportedly bore the words “Everything’s Unmissable,” collapsed amid strong winds. Festival organizers expressed deep devastation and confirmed they are cooperating with Sussex Police, the Health and Safety Executive, and local authorities to investigate the incident. The event, which was sold out, was scheduled to run through Sunday before being brought to an early close.

Church leaders and organizations, including Churches Together in England, have offered prayers for the victims and their families. Pastor Guanco’s congregation remembered him as a faithful servant and devoted family man, stating they are trusting in the sovereignty of God during this time of grief. A fundraising appeal to support his wife and daughter has since received significant community support.
