Aleksandar Vučić concedes Serbian parliamentary election to student-led movement
Aleksandar Vučić, who has led Serbia as president or prime minister since 2014, conceded defeat in snap parliamentary elections held on October 25, 2026. Preliminary figures cited by Vučić suggest the student-led opposition movement secured between 135 and 140 seats in the 250-member National Assembly, while his Serbian Progressive Party is expected to hold 105 seats. Official results from the election commission are pending.
The election follows nearly two years of widespread protests triggered by a fatal railway station collapse in Novi Sad. Members of Serbia’s evangelical community, including pastors and academics, participated in these demonstrations, characterizing their involvement as a pursuit of justice. Voter turnout reached approximately 70%, the highest level recorded in the country since 1992.
Following the concession, large crowds gathered in Belgrade and Novi Sad to celebrate the results. While the election commission reported a 64.9% turnout by 6 p.m., pollsters estimated the final participation rate to be higher. Citizens also cast ballots at polling stations located in various international cities across Europe and the United States.
