Survey Finds Charlie Kirk Among Most Difficult Topics on U.S. Campuses

A recent report from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) identifies Christian political activist Charlie Kirk as one of the most challenging subjects for college students to discuss. The 2027 College Free Speech Rankings, which surveyed nearly 63,000 students across 261 institutions, found that nearly half of respondents nationwide consider Kirk a difficult topic. At Utah Valley University, where Kirk was shot in September 2025, 62% of students identified him as the most difficult subject to discuss on campus.

The survey highlights that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Donald Trump, and abortion also rank among the most sensitive topics for students. Following the assassination of Kirk, several Turning Point USA chapters faced challenges regarding their official recognition on various campuses. While FIRE President Greg Lukianoff noted slight improvements in campus free speech policies, he characterized the overall environment as grim, citing ongoing concerns regarding administrative censorship and the suppression of controversial viewpoints.
