President Mahama Rejects Public Funding for Ghana National Cathedral

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his administration will not use taxpayer funds to complete the National Cathedral project. During a town hall meeting in the Upper West Region, the president stated that the project originated as a personal pledge by his predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, rather than as an official national policy. He suggested that the country’s Christian community possesses the capacity to finance the construction independently, proposing that a contribution of GH¢1,000 per person could generate the necessary capital.

President Mahama clarified that his stance does not constitute opposition to the cathedral itself, but rather reflects concerns regarding its financing, site selection, and the displacement caused by its development. In response to the project's stalled status, the Christian Council of Ghana has formed a technical committee to evaluate the future of the facility. This group is tasked with developing a sustainable funding model and providing recommendations on the project's location and implementation. The committee is expected to submit its findings to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs within one month.
