Monica’s Prayer and the Conversion of Augustine
In a reflection on the power of persistent prayer, the story of Monica and her son, Augustine, highlights a mother's deep concern for her child's spiritual path. When Augustine chose to move to a city Monica associated with moral decline, she fervently prayed that he would not leave. Despite her efforts, he departed, leaving his mother in a state of profound grief.
However, Augustine later recounted in his writings that his time in that city became the setting for his spiritual transformation. He attributed his eventual change of heart to God’s response to his mother’s long-standing petitions. Augustine expressed his belief that God heard the core of Monica’s desires, ultimately guiding him toward the faith she had continually sought for him.
