Russell Moore reflects on personal journey of faith and spiritual resonance

Russell Moore recently shared a personal reflection on his adolescent years in Biloxi, Mississippi, describing a pivotal night in the 1980s that shaped his lifelong commitment to Christianity. While walking near his home, Moore grappled with existential questions and concerns regarding the hypocrisy he observed within the surrounding religious culture. He recounts that while looking at the stars, he experienced a profound sense of being 'addressed' by God, which he likens to the biblical imagery of 'deep calling to deep' from Psalm 42:7.

Moore notes that he initially struggled to trust this subjective experience, as he had been taught that feelings could be unreliable. Consequently, he spent years focusing on the objective study of theology and the defense of Christian orthodoxy. He reflects that while he sought to define and defend the gospel, he sometimes found it challenging to maintain the sense of the gospel as 'good news.' Ultimately, his testimony highlights the tension between intellectual rigor and the personal, resonant experience of faith that he encountered as a young man.
