Series of Attacks in Nigeria’s Plateau State Result in Multiple Deaths

A series of violent attacks in Nigeria’s Plateau State has resulted in numerous deaths, with local leaders and residents reporting that at least 13 people were killed over the weekend of September 19–20. Among the victims was Pastor Samuel Nandi of the Baptist Church in Maraban Kantoma, who was ambushed and killed while traveling to a church service on Sunday morning. His son was critically wounded in the attack, which also claimed the life of a church employee.

Earlier that weekend, five laborers were killed while traveling to Gana-Ropp, and additional fatalities were reported in the villages of Baten Wereng and Ratyidi. While Nigerian authorities have not officially confirmed the perpetrators, local community leaders and advocacy groups have attributed the violence to radical Fulani militants. Following the weekend violence, reports indicate that at least 15 more Christians were killed in Barkin Ladi County between September 21 and September 25 during further raids on several villages.

Community representatives, including the Mwaghavul Development Association and the Berom Youth Moulders, have condemned the ongoing insecurity and called for urgent government intervention. Residents report that the persistent violence has forced many to flee their homes, as security forces struggle to contain the attacks in the region.
