Mel Gibson Previews Upcoming Film The Resurrection of the Christ

Director Mel Gibson has announced that his upcoming film, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 6, 2027. The project serves as a follow-up to his 2004 blockbuster, The Passion of the Christ, which is returning to theaters for a remastered 4K limited engagement from September 10-17. This re-release will feature a behind-the-scenes preview of the new production.

While the original film focused on the final 12 hours of Jesus' life, the new two-part project will star Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus and expand into broader spiritual realms. Gibson explained that the film will explore concepts such as the "Hell of the just," the "Hell of the damned," and the biblical firmament. The director stated that he intends to use the narrative gaps found in the synoptic Gospels to make suppositions about events not explicitly detailed in Scripture. Gibson emphasized that these creative choices are intended to enhance traditional Christian teachings rather than contradict them.
