Manny Pacquiao Appointed to Lead Philippine Anti-Poverty Commission

Former professional boxer and senator Manny Pacquiao has been sworn in as the secretary and lead convenor of the Philippines’ National Anti-Poverty Commission. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. administered the oath of office at Malacañang Palace on September 8. The commission is tasked with coordinating government efforts to reduce poverty, strengthening related policies, and facilitating the involvement of marginalized sectors in national development.

Government officials noted that Pacquiao’s personal history of overcoming extreme poverty influenced his selection for the role. Following the appointment, Bishop Noel Alba Pantoja of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches encouraged Pacquiao to view his public service as a form of Christian ministry. Citing Colossians 3:23-24, Pantoja urged the new secretary to lead with integrity and compassion while working to provide hope for vulnerable populations.

This appointment follows Pacquiao’s recent address at the Arise Asia 2026 Congress in Manila, where he spoke to approximately 4,000 attendees about his personal faith journey. During that event, he emphasized the importance of demonstrating one's beliefs through practical service and consistent action.
