Haitian Christian Community Mourns Victims of Deadly Gang Massacre

Mourners gathered in Kenscoff, Haiti, on Sunday to hold funerals for victims of a violent gang attack that occurred between August 23 and 24. The massacre, which resulted in 47 confirmed deaths, saw approximately 150 heavily armed gang members target a local church where residents had sought refuge. Survivors reported that attackers forced people out of the building before executing them in the courtyard. In addition to the fatalities, dozens of individuals were kidnapped, though community leaders and UNICEF successfully secured the release of 13 hostages, including six children and seven women.

The violence has severely impacted the local Christian community and hindered humanitarian efforts. Missionary Maddalena Boschetti noted that the ongoing climate of kidnapping and insecurity has made basic ministry and daily life increasingly dangerous. In response to the tragedy, Haitian National Police have launched an investigation into potential negligence or complicity by law enforcement, as survivors have criticized the slow official response to the assault. Armed civilians and police maintained a security presence during the funeral services amid ongoing fears of further violence.
