German Evangelist Lothar Velten Dies at 82

Lothar Velten, a prominent figure in German-speaking tent evangelism, passed away on August 31 at the age of 82. Over a career spanning six decades, Velten became widely recognized for his work in Austria and Germany, particularly through his long-standing association with the Deutsche Zeltmission (DZM).

Velten, who originally trained as an electrician before studying theology, was known for his trademark "Life to the Full" mission slogan. He was credited with modernizing tent evangelism by introducing bistro areas within the marquees and integrating local community groups, such as fire brigades and sports clubs, into his programs to reach both churchgoers and those without a religious background.

Before joining the DZM in 1998, Velten served as a preacher in Austria for 12 years and directed evangelistic efforts for the youth association Entschieden für Christus for two decades. The DZM noted that his approach to ministry was defined by his ability to adapt to local cultural contexts, a practice that continues to influence tent mission work in the region today.
