Compassion International Sues Former Employee Over Child Protection Allegations
Compassion International has filed a lawsuit against former senior business analyst Andrew Vezey, alleging he breached a confidentiality agreement by leaking internal documents to the media. The Colorado Springs-based ministry, which supports 2.4 million children globally, claims the disclosure caused significant reputational damage and loss of donor support. A court has issued a temporary restraining order against Vezey, with a hearing scheduled for November 13.
The legal action follows reports that an internal ministry document identified 25,810 instances of suspected grooming within sponsor correspondence between 2018 and 2026. These cases were flagged by an AI tool named PATCh, which Vezey helped develop. While the internal report suggested transitioning to controlled engagement to mitigate risks, ministry leadership expressed concerns that restricting direct communication could negatively impact sponsorship funding and the children who rely on it.
In response, Compassion International stated that the characterization of its safeguarding efforts is misleading. The organization maintains that the internal report reflects its ongoing commitment to evolving child protection strategies through the use of technology.
