South Carolina Church Faces Backlash Due to Name Confusion With Pastor

Mercy Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina, has reported receiving hostile messages and protests following the release of a Netflix documentary series, "Death of the Pastor's Wife." The three-part series examines the 2024 death of Mica Miller, the estranged wife of JP Miller, who currently leads a different congregation called Mercy Church in Myrtle Beach. The Conway congregation has clarified that it is an independent entity with no affiliation to JP Miller or his ministry.

Pastor Lloyd Phipps of the Conway church issued a statement to address the confusion, emphasizing that his congregation is entirely separate from the Myrtle Beach pastor. The backlash has reportedly extended to local businesses associated with the Conway church. JP Miller, who was indicted on federal charges of stalking and lying to federal agents prior to his wife's death, has consistently denied allegations of abuse and involvement in her passing. While officials ruled Mica Miller's death a suicide, the documentary highlights ongoing concerns from her family and friends regarding the circumstances surrounding her death.
