Scottish nurse pursues legal action against Royal College of Nursing

Sandie Peggie, a nurse with over 30 years of experience, has initiated an employment tribunal against the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). Peggie alleges that the organization discriminated against her by denying legal assistance following her suspension by NHS Fife. The suspension occurred after she objected to a transgender doctor using female changing facilities. This marks Peggie’s second tribunal appearance, following a partial victory in a previous case against NHS Fife regarding the same incident.

During the hearing, the RCN denied the allegations of discrimination, asserting that its decision not to provide legal advice was based on internal organizational rules and that Peggie’s gender-critical beliefs were not a factor. Peggie is receiving support from the Christian Legal Centre, with fellow nurses Jennifer Melle and Bethany Hutchison appearing as witnesses. Melle, who was previously cleared by the Nursing and Midwifery Council after a dispute over pronoun usage, has joined others in calling for national NHS guidance to address workplace conflicts surrounding gender identity policies.
