Church of England official denounces Christian nationalism in Parliament

During a recent parliamentary session, Second Church Estates Commissioner Marsha de Cordova addressed concerns regarding the rise of Christian nationalism in the United Kingdom. Responding to a question from Labour MP Richard Baker, who characterized the movement as a source of division, de Cordova stated that the Church of England rejects the use of faith to exclude or intimidate others. She asserted that those promoting such ideologies do not reflect the core tenets of the Christian faith or true patriotism.

To address these concerns and broader political polarization, the Church has established working groups tasked with advising parishes on matters of national identity and community cohesion. De Cordova highlighted the Church’s ongoing commitment to interfaith engagement, noting that most dioceses employ advisers to foster local unity. This discussion follows recent tensions between Church leadership and political figures, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, over issues of immigration and the perceived co-opting of religious rhetoric for political purposes.
