Minnesota Pastor Steve Junker Dies Following Cruise Ship Accident

Pastor Steve Junker of Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon, Minnesota, has passed away at age 58. The pastor died following a severe cervical spinal cord injury and a near-drowning incident that occurred on August 16 while he was attending his son’s wedding aboard a cruise ship in Italy. Following the accident, Junker was initially hospitalized in Naples before being transported to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 23 for further treatment.

Junker’s daughter, Elizabeth, announced his death on September 5, noting that medical testing revealed injuries that were ultimately untreatable. Before entering the ministry, Junker worked as a pharmacist and had served as the pastor of Chippewa Lutheran Church for nearly a decade. His family and congregation remembered him for his animated preaching style and his dedication to helping others. In a statement, his widow, Jeanine Junker, expressed the family's hope in the resurrection, citing 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 as a source of comfort during their mourning.
