Seafarer wellbeing declines amid reports of chronic workplace strain

The Mission to Seafarers has reported a decline in seafarer happiness for the second consecutive quarter in 2026. According to the organization’s latest index, which measures wellbeing across ten categories, the overall happiness score dropped to 6.87 out of 10, down from 7.18 in the previous quarter. The report suggests that the maritime industry is shifting from acute crises toward a period of chronic strain, characterized by eroding morale and persistent operational pressures.

Shore leave saw the most significant decline, falling to a score of 5.72. Seafarers reported that increasingly hectic port calls and immigration restrictions have made it difficult to leave their vessels, a factor the report identifies as essential for mental health and restoration. Workload management also ranked among the lowest categories, with a score of 6.20. The findings highlight the psychological burden placed on crews as they navigate geopolitical threats and commercial demands, emphasizing that these workers face significant risks while facilitating international trade.
