Seven Faith Leaders Arrested During Immigration Protest in Vermont

Seven faith leaders were arrested on September 4, 2026, after refusing to leave a federal immigration facility in Williston, Vermont. The group, which included several Protestant clergy members, was protesting against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies. According to the Vermont State Police, the building owner requested that the protesters vacate the premises, which also houses private businesses and other public entities. When the individuals refused to comply, law enforcement took them into custody for trespassing.

The arrested individuals include Congregationalist pastors Jessica Derise and Elizabeth Gleich, United Methodist elder Rebecca Girrell, Unitarian Universalist minister Karen Johnston, Episcopal clergy Earl Kooperkamp and Susan McMillan, and Quaker activist Catherine Bock. Following their arrest, the group was processed at the Williston Barracks and released with citations. They are scheduled to appear for arraignment at the Vermont Superior Court on October 20, 2026.

In a statement, Susan McMillan characterized the protest as a moral response to federal immigration policies, arguing that such actions are inconsistent with Christian teachings. The Episcopal Diocese of Vermont expressed support for the clergy members involved in the demonstration.
