Zurich Reformed Church members to vote on binding climate regulations

Members of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich are scheduled to vote on September 27 regarding a proposal to mandate environmental standards for all church properties. The measure, which would amend the church's constitutional ordinance, aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from church buildings by the end of 2035. If passed, parishes would be required to implement the "Grüner Güggel" (Green Rooster) environmental management system.

The proposal originated from the "Creation Initiative," which was submitted in 2023. While the church already includes care for creation in its governing documents, this vote addresses the implementation process. The core of the debate centers on whether binding environmental targets should be set by central cantonal bodies or remain under the authority of individual parishes, which are responsible for building maintenance and funding.

Supporters of the amendment argue that it establishes necessary, binding goals without dictating specific methods for each parish. Potential actions could include energy-efficient renovations, the replacement of fossil-fuel heating systems, and the integration of ecological themes into spiritual and educational activities. All church members aged 16 and older are eligible to participate in the upcoming ballot.
