UK Sports Organizations Restrict Female Categories to Biological Sex

The Football Association of Wales and the Royal Yachting Association have updated their eligibility policies to restrict female sports categories to biological sex. These changes follow formal legal warnings issued to ten sports governing bodies by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International on behalf of the Women’s Sports Union. The legal letters argued that permitting biological males to compete in women’s categories violates the U.K. Equality Act 2010 and aligns with the April 2025 U.K. Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland Ltd v. The Scottish Ministers, which defined "woman" as biological sex.

ADF International cited Section 195 of the Equality Act, which permits sex-based restrictions in competitive sports to ensure fairness and safety regarding physical strength and stamina. While the Football Association of Wales confirmed that eligibility for sex-reserved competitions will now be determined by birth sex, the Royal Yachting Association noted that while it will apply these rules for events it organizes, local clubs may still set their own criteria. Other organizations, including Swim England, Parkrun, and Rounders England, are currently reviewing their policies in response to the legal warnings.
