Salem Lutheran Church Continues Longstanding Tradition at Minnesota State Fair

As the Minnesota State Fair begins its 12-day run, Salem Lutheran Church has opened its dining hall to serve fairgoers, maintaining a tradition that dates back to the early 20th century. The fair, which attracts approximately 2 million visitors annually, recently set an opening-day attendance record of over 155,000 people. Salem Lutheran is one of only two church-operated food stands remaining at the event, a significant decline from the 89 church-run dining halls that operated at the fair in 1903.

Volunteers at the Salem Lutheran stand emphasize the importance of hospitality as they serve traditional items like Swedish egg coffee. While the fair features a wide array of commercial vendors and entertainment, the church dining hall offers a quieter environment for attendees. The fair, which originated in 1855, serves as a major cultural event in the region, blending agricultural exhibits with carnival attractions and food service.
