Documentary Series Examines Secular Influence on Contemporary Christian Music

Filmmaker and musician Jonathan Allen Wright has released a 10-part documentary series titled "The Untold History of CCM," which explores the business practices and production processes behind contemporary Christian music. Wright, who has a background in the church and the music industry, aims to encourage listeners to consider the commercial factors that influence the worship songs performed in congregations today.

A central concern raised by Wright is the role of major secular record labels, such as Universal, Sony, and Warner, in the Christian music market. He argues that the involvement of these corporations can introduce financial pressures that may alter the creative direction of faith-based artists. According to Wright, these labels may prioritize specific musical parameters to ensure commercial success, which he suggests can impact the authenticity of worship music.

Despite his critique of industry structures, Wright emphasizes his continued appreciation for the church and the work of many Christian artists. He states that his goal is to foster greater awareness among churchgoers regarding how their music is produced and distributed, rather than to discourage the use of CCM.
