Rare 16th-century Erasmus book stolen from Suffolk church

A 1548 English edition of the Paraphrases of Erasmus has been stolen from St Mary’s Church in Chediston, Suffolk. The rare volume, which explains parts of the New Testament, was reportedly removed from a locked display case. The theft was discovered by the curate, the Rev Dr Edmund Smith, after a visitor inquired about viewing the historic text.

Commissioned during the reign of Edward VI, the book is considered a significant piece of English religious heritage. Rev Smith expressed deep concern regarding the vulnerability of church artifacts, noting that many historic items remain in parish churches due to a long-standing tradition of trust. He has appealed for the return of the book, emphasizing its importance to the local community's history.

Commentators have highlighted the irony of the book being stolen after surviving nearly five centuries of religious and political upheaval. While the item holds historical and cultural significance, Rev Smith noted that the church is prepared to offer forgiveness if the book is returned.
