Reports Detail Systematic Suppression of Religious Freedom in Occupied Ukraine

Recent reports from government officials and international observers highlight a pattern of religious suppression in Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian Minister of Social Policy Denys Uliutin and documentation from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, hundreds of religious structures have been damaged or destroyed since the start of the invasion. Officials further report that 67 religious leaders and clergy have been killed or have died following alleged torture while under occupation.

Observers describe a strategy where independent religious expression is restricted, leading to the closure of Evangelical and Catholic churches, some of which have been repurposed by occupying forces. In contrast, the Moscow-aligned Russian Orthodox Church has been granted preferential status in these regions. Beyond the targeting of religious institutions, reports indicate that children in occupied areas are being subjected to mandatory Russian curricula and re-education programs, with thousands of minors allegedly relocated to facilities within Russia.
