Pakistani Christian Detained Under Blasphemy Charges in Punjab

Amir Masih, a Christian resident of Dhala Sharif in Pakistan’s Gujranwala District, remains in police custody following his August 11 arrest. Authorities filed a first information report against Masih under sections 295-A, 295-C, and 298 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The charges stem from allegations that Masih made offensive religious remarks and circulated controversial content on social media, including material involving religious imagery.

The inclusion of Section 295-C, which carries a mandatory death penalty, has drawn significant concern from human rights advocates. Human Rights Focus Pakistan has called for an independent investigation, urging authorities to verify the authenticity of the social media evidence and determine if the account attributed to Masih was compromised or used without his knowledge.

Following the accusations, reports indicate that tensions rose in Masih’s village, leading to threats against his family and property. Fearing potential mob violence, several local Christian families reportedly fled their homes temporarily. The allegations against Masih have not yet been proven in court, and advocates continue to monitor the situation as the legal proceedings remain ongoing.
