Two Christian Men Detained on Blasphemy Charges in Pakistan

Two Christian men in Pakistan’s Punjab province are currently in custody following separate accusations of blasphemy. In August, laborer Amir Masih was arrested in the Gujranwala District after being accused of sharing an offensive video on social media. Advocacy groups, including Voice of the Martyrs Canada, have questioned the authenticity of the account linked to the post and are calling for an independent investigation. Following the arrest, Masih’s family and several other local Christian families reportedly fled their homes due to fears of mob violence.

In a separate incident in Lahore, 26-year-old Samuel Arif was arrested on August 29 after a local man alleged that Arif made derogatory remarks about religious figures. Reports indicate that Arif was physically assaulted by a mob before police intervened. Arif and his family maintain that the accusations are false and stem from a personal dispute with the accuser. These developments occur despite recent government data suggesting a decline in registered blasphemy cases nationwide, though rights advocates continue to express concern regarding the application of these laws.
