Netherlands Withdraws From 2027 Eurovision Song Contest Over Israel's Participation

The Dutch public broadcasting organization, NPO, has officially announced that the Netherlands will not participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. This decision reverses a previous commitment made in September to return to the competition following a boycott of the 2026 event. The withdrawal comes amid ongoing international debate regarding Israel's inclusion in the contest during the conflict in Gaza.

Internal pressure played a significant role in the decision, with approximately 400 broadcasting employees urging the organization to remain out of the competition. AVROTROS, the broadcaster typically responsible for the Dutch entry, had already withdrawn, citing concerns that the contest is no longer politically neutral. NPO chairwoman Jet de Ranitz stated that the organization was unable to form a viable team to manage the country's entry due to these internal divisions.

The European Broadcasting Union expressed disappointment regarding the withdrawal, acknowledging the complex viewpoints surrounding the event. Meanwhile, the Netherlands has faced broader domestic concerns regarding antisemitism, including reports of intimidation directed at Jewish performers such as former Eurovision winner Lenny Kuhr.
