Portland Public Schools Settles Lawsuit With Parent Over LGBT Curriculum Concerns
Portland Public Schools has reached a legal settlement with Allison Roberts, a parent who was previously barred from Meriwether Lewis Elementary School. Under the agreement filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, the district has withdrawn a trespass notice and a formal warning issued against Roberts. The settlement affirms her First Amendment right to distribute literature and criticize district policies in public forums.
The dispute originated after Roberts expressed concerns regarding the school's use of LGBT-inclusive curriculum, including an "identity flower" activity and the display of an Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag. Roberts alleged that these materials were introduced without parental notification or opt-out opportunities. The district previously accused Roberts of disruptive behavior and harassment, claims she contested through her legal complaint.
As part of the resolution, the district will allow Roberts to request exemptions for her children from LGBT-related curriculum and has committed to notifying her if her children express gender dysphoria or identify as a different gender. Additionally, the district agreed to review its harassment policies to ensure alignment with constitutional standards.
