Barna Report Examines Teenagers' Sources for Identity Guidance

A new report from Barna, titled "Reimagining Ministry for Gen Alpha," reveals that while a majority of U.S. teenagers feel comfortable turning to Jesus for advice on identity, they prioritize parents and friends as their primary sources of counsel. Surveying 1,500 teenagers aged 13-18, researchers found that mothers ranked as the most trusted advisors, followed by fathers and friends. Jesus ranked fourth among all respondents, with 68% expressing comfort in seeking His guidance.

Among "faith-activated" teenagers—those identified as the most spiritually engaged—the rankings shifted, with Jesus and the Bible tying for second place behind mothers. While youth pastors and church leaders were consulted by both groups, they ranked lower than personal relationships. The study suggests that parents remain the most influential voices in a teenager's life, leading researchers to conclude that effective youth ministries should focus on equipping parents to disciple their children at home rather than operating independently of the family unit.
